MARQUETTE — Lake Superior, the world’s largest freshwater bath tub, will host the world’s largest rubber duck this weekend and so much more.
The Festival of Sail takes place from 8 a.m. to 6 p.m. today through Sunday at Mattson Lower Harbor Park.
The world record-holding rubber duck, named Mama Duck, will be there along with massive ships built exactly like those 200 years ago. Mama Duck is 61 feet high, 69 feet wide, 79 feet long and weighs a little more than six elephants for a total of 35,000 pounds.
The festival will feature several historical ships including the nao Trinidad from Seville, Spain, the Pride of Baltimore II and the U.S. Brig Niagara, the third construction of the famous ship that fought in the War of 1812.
The original nao Trinidad set sail from Seville as the flag ship of the Magellan-Elcano expedition, a three-year expedition circumnavigated the world, which marks the first time that had ever been accomplished.
Another ship which will be in attendance during the festival is the Pride of Baltimore II, a replica of an early-19th century Baltimore clipper. The replica ship was commissioned in 1988 and has visited over 200 ports across 40 countries.
Tickets for onboard tours will cost $33 each but family and friends single-day passes — for groups of a minmum of three and a maximum of eight — with board tours cost $29 apiece.
Festival of Sail will also feature day sails, educational programming, food, beverages and more. The event’s organizers are Travel Marquette and the Tall Ships of America.
