Firefighters battle blaze at Midland County’s Robinson Industries
COLEMAN, MI — An early morning fire has razed a Midland County-based plastics manufacturing plant. The plant’s owners, however, are vowing to rebuild.
The fire at Robinson Industries Inc., 3051 W. Curtis Road in Coleman, was reported at 5:20 a.m. on Thursday, March 31. The fire resulted in extensive losses at the facility, though no injuries were suffered.
“We want all of our customers and employees and community members to know that we are definitely still in business,” Robinson Industries posted on its Facebook page at 10:09 a.m. Thursday. “We also want to express our deepest gratitude to our employees and first responders who went above and beyond to control the fire and get everyone to safety.”
The company recently marked its 75th anniversary, having been in business since 1947. The company specializes in designing and manufacturing pallets, packaging, and dunnage through single- or twin-sheet thermoforming or injection molding.
Robinson Industries is women-owned and certified as such by the Women’s Business Enterprise National Council.
At 12:54 p.m. Thursday, the company again posted on its Facebook page that its leaders plan to rebuild.
“First of all, rest assured that we will build back better and stronger as quickly as possible,” the post states. “We actually have some machines available to us and we are strategizing about how to proceed efficiently. We were in meetings about this while the fire was still burning.”
The company will pay all employees at the Curtis Road plant for a 40-hour week. Employees should then plan to file for unemployment on April 4, unless their managers inform them otherwise.
“We are working closely with the union on every step,” the post states. “It is our goal to contact every employee either today or tomorrow. We greatly appreciate all of you especially in a time like this.”
MLive could not reach the Coleman Community Fire Department for comment on what sparked the fire or when it was quelled.
