This week we publish our ranking of North American mold makers. The top 100 are in print, but a total of 144 firms are online. The total related sales for fiscal 2020 is $3 billion, just up from $2.9 billion reported last year. The average sales per company is $20.8 million.
Concours Technologies Inc. has the biggest dollar gain at $54 million, with the recent acquisition of Active Industrial Solutions of Windsor, Ontario. AIS ranked at No. 8 in 2020. Coming in at No. 3, Concours has consistently ranked among our top 5 since 2010.
Medbio LLC of Grand Rapids, Mich., holds 3 places in our ranking resulting from acquisitions. Medbio Clinton Township was previously listed as Aim Plastics Inc., Medbio Orchard Park was previously listed as Polymer Conversions Inc. and they also own Concept Molds Inc. of Schoolcraft, Mich. Estimated North American mold sales would be $11.8 million, all together.
Looking closer at the average sales per company for our top 100 firms is interesting when compared to our top 100 in each processor ranking. Pipe, profile and tubing extruders along with rotational molders had the biggest gains per company with an average of 5.3 percent. Mold makers fell right in the middle with 1.5 percent growth.
This chart plots the average sales per company growth, omitting blow molders, which won't publish until next month.
Also of note, the American Mold Builders Association released its 2021 Shop Rate Report — a first-time deep dive into the charges for engineering, mold making and specialty services, AMBA plans to conduct the survey every two years.
