The world's largest rubber duckJim Orgill
The world’s largest rubber duck is coming to Michigan.
The massive yellow duck is among several attractions coming to Alpena and Marquette as part of the 2022 Festival of Sail.
“We’re excited to bring this incredible festival, along with the world’s largest rubber duck, to Alpena,” said Craig Samborski, Festival of Sail producer. “Alpena’s previous history with the ships, layout and partnership with the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center made for an excellent fit.”
The popular festival will take place at the Great Lakes Maritime Heritage Center waterfront on Lake Huron in Alpena July 15-17. The ships, and the rubber duck, will make their way to Marquette’s Mattison Lower Harbor Park on Lake Superior Aug. 12-14.
“Certainly something like having a giant duck is unique, and it will be Ore to Shore weekend so it’ll already be a busy weekend, but as some local people have mentioned, it’s a great thing for kids to do,” said Susan Estler, Travel Marquette Executive Director, told WLUC-TV.
Additional ships expected to be on site include the Nao Trinidad from Seville, Spain, the Pride of Baltimore II, a reproduction of a typical early 19th-century “Baltimore clipper” topsail schooner and the U.S. Brig Niagara, a 118-foot-tall, two-masted, square-rigged sailing vessel modeled after American ships that defeated the British at the Battle of Lake Erie during the War of 1812.
On board tours, dockside tours, vendors, food, music, entertainment, and a craft beer garden will also be available.
Tickets are available online (Alpena, Marquette). Cost is between $29 and $99 depending on the package.
