David Compton Garton, Jr., 85, of Port Elizabeth died Sunday June 26, 2022 at home with loved ones following a short illness. He was born May 12, 1937 in Millville to the late David Compton, Sr. and Hannah (Simmerman) Garton. He was a jack-of-all-trades, having worked for a number of years as a carpenter and cabinet-maker at Wheaton Historical Society, a mold maker at Armstrong Cork Company, as the owner of Little Dave’s Bait and Tackle Shop, and as a school bus driver during his retirement. He was an avid reader of mystery and crime novels. David loved the outdoors as a hunter and fisherman and kept a large garden. He enjoyed cooking and spending time with his family and friends and would give help to anyone. He enjoyed his dogs and spent many hours with them. David was a proud member of the undefeated (23-0) Millville High School Thunderbolts Football team and was named the All-County Defensive Player of the Year in 1955. He previously served as a member of the Port Elizabeth Volunteer Fire Company and was a member of the Masonic, Elks, and Moose Lodges and men’s coffee clubs. David was a member of the Port Elizabeth United Methodist Church. He is survived by his wife of 65 years Rebecca Lillian Garton (Reeves), sons, Herbert, and Maurice (Monica) and daughters Rebecaa Rizzo and Lynn Hannah (James), 9 grandchildren and 9 great-grandchildren, as well as sisters Lillian Chambers (Paul) of Maryland and Sharon Garton of Heislerville. The family will receive friends and loved ones on Sunday July 10, 2022 at 1:00 pm at Hoffman Funeral Home 643 Main Street Leesburg prior to the memorial service honoring David’s life at 1:30 pm.
